British Wrestling Licensing Requirements
To coach wrestling in Scotland, you must obtain a coach's license from British Wrestling. This ensures you're covered by their insurance and have met the necessary standards. Here's what you'll need:

1. Coaching Certification

This can be acquired once you have completed your coaching qualification through British Wrestling. For coaches who have an existing coaching qualification awarded outside the UK, we recognise some qualifications based on the course content and other learning. Get in touch with British Wrestling, via [email protected], to discuss how you can be recognised as a licensed coach.

2. Code of Conduct
All British Wrestling licensed coaches must abide by the BW code of conduct. This is confirmed by your active membership. You can find a copy of the code of conduct here.

3. First Aid
This needs to consist of a minimum of 3 hours of learning. This can involve courses such as Emergency First Aid for Work or in Sport. Some providers offer renewal courses if you have done a first aid course in the past. These courses can be found with various providers such as:

4. Enhanced Criminal Records Check
Obtaining the criminal records check is the most time-consuming part of the licensing process. Please allow 6-8 weeks for this to be completed. To apply for your enhanced DBS check, email [email protected] with your full name and state that you require an enhanced DBS check for coaching purposes. BWA charges £18 for a check but other providers’ costs can vary across the UK.

Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG)
As a coach in Scotland, you'll need to obtain a Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) check through Scottish Wrestling. This replaces the DBS check required in other parts of the UK.

5. Membership
To be eligible for a British Wrestling coaching license, you must be a full member. To apply for your membership please visit this link

6. Safeguarding Certification
This needs to consist of a minimum of 3 hours of learning. This can involve courses such as the courses hosted by the NSPCC and CSPU. If you have done a safeguarding course in the past, renewal courses are available. These can be found with providers such as:

Female Coaching Bursary
British Wrestling offers a free coaching course for a female candidate on every course. To apply for a free place please email: [email protected].
